Rilsan is made from castor oil, from which a monomer is extracted and transformed into polyamide 11. This process creates a semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymer with exceptional mechanical properties.
The discovery of Rilsan® Polyamide 11 dates back to the 1940s, during research into alternative sources for synthetic polymers. At the time, the chemical industry was heavily reliant on petroleum-based raw materials, and there was a growing interest in developing bio-based alternatives.
French researchers, particularly those working for Orgachim (which later became part of Arkema), explored castor oil as a renewable feedstock. They successfully identified a way to extract 11-aminoundecanoic acid from castor oil, which could be polymerized to create polyamide 11. This breakthrough led to the industrial production of Rilsan® PA11 in the 1950s.
What made Rilsan® unique was its high-performance mechanical properties, flexibility, chemical resistance, and sustainability, setting it apart from other polyamides like PA6 and PA12. Over time, it became a preferred material for demanding applications in industries such as automotive, aerospace, oil & gas, and medical devices.
